Harry Cobb dealt. He slid each card across the oak with a flick that sounded like coins, and by eleven I was four shillings down and Tom had stopped speaking to me. Then Harry pushed a king of hearts into the middle and said it was the only thing in the room worth the stake. Nobody had seen him draw it from his sleeve, and nobody asked where he had been keeping it.

I had the queen of hearts in my hand already, which was the only good card I'd had all night. I wanted that king more than I wanted my shillings back, and I told myself it was the cards I wanted. I matched his stake with my last coin and laid the queen down. Harry looked at her for a long while, then at me, and then he laughed the way men laugh when they have lost on purpose.

I have the king now, and I have the queen, and I keep them on the windowsill where the light comes through the net. They face the same way and they lean in, though they never touch. That is how Harry left them, a finger's width apart, which is about how far apart we have always been. I will write again when the tide turns. Your loving sister, Ada.
