Matching portal ring tattoos on forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

Two forearms show matching tattoos, each a black stick figure standing within an oval ring. The ring on the left arm is teal and the ring on the right arm is orange, with bold black outlines on the figures and a soft, slightly uneven colour fill. The two designs sit at similar heights on the forearms, with a blue shirt visible at the left edge of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nasir had painted the second ring on the stairwell wall of Ferris House before the caretaker, Mrs Oyelaran, could stop him, and by the time the paint dried the orange one was already the better of the two. Teal was for the lift lobby, he decided, because the lift lobby smelled of bleach and wet coats and needed something cold to look at. Orange was for the rooftop door, where the sky came in sideways and the wind pushed at everything.

His cousin Tomasz said the rings wouldn't work unless you stood in the middle with both feet flat and thought hard about where you wanted to go. Nasir thought that was the sort of thing a person said when he hadn't tried it yet. So on the Tuesday, when the power went out on the ninth floor and the stairwell turned to black, Nasir walked to the teal ring with his hand on the cold rail, stepped into the painted loop, and kept going.

He came out on the roof beside the orange ring, and the wind was exactly as sideways as he had imagined. Below him the whole estate lay lit in its small yellow squares, and somewhere under one of those squares Tomasz was shouting his name up the stairwell. Nasir stood with one foot in each circle and understood that he could go down either way, and that neither way was the one he had been planning all week.

When the lights came back on at half past nine, he was sitting on the bottom stair with a torch he had never switched on. He let Tomasz believe he had simply walked down in the dark, and he left the orange ring where it was, for next time.
