Matching puzzle piece tattoos on hands
Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, each with a solid black puzzle piece tattoo. Each piece carries a pink swirling line that curls across its surface, and the two pieces are designed to fit together. The black fill is smooth and dense, the pink linework is clean, and the close framing keeps both tattoos sharp against the skin.

The jigsaw had lain at the bottom of Mrs Galt's trunk since the mill burned, nine hundred pieces of sycamore, each one painted pink on the back with a swirl like a curl of smoke. Two were missing, and the rest had gone to a museum in Leeds that never sent a cheque. 'You'll find them up by the wall,' she said, pressing a brown envelope of old measurements into my hand, 'where the sycamore came down in February.' She meant the tree the gale had split, and I walked up through the bracken with my saw over my shoulder before the light went.

The trunk lay across the old boundary wall, its heartwood open to the air, dark and sweet-smelling where the rain had got in. I cut two blanks from the first clean length, each about the size of my palm, and I could not get the shapes right until I stopped measuring and simply held the wood against the last of the sky. The knobs and sockets seemed to come out of the grain as if they had been waiting there. Below me a vixen barked twice, an owl answered from the beeches, and I worked on until the blanks were only faintly warm from my hands.
Back in the shop I painted the swirls with the pink Mrs Galt kept in a jam jar, a dye her husband had brought back from Cádiz and never named. The line only curled from one piece into the other if they were turned to meet at the notch, so I laid them side by side on the bench and let the glue dry without clamping, so that neither would ever belong to the other by force. When she came back in with the tea she saw them there, the pink running unbroken across the seam, and she set her cup down without a word and picked up the one with the knot.
