Two forearms are shown side by side, each with a black fine line script quote. The left arm reads I'll keep you wild with an outlined triangle beneath it, and the right arm reads I'll keep you safe. The ink is black on pale skin, set against a plaid sleeve on the left and a teal sleeve on the right.

Mrs Varley's boarding house smelled of Brasso and damp tweed, and the landlady kept a dish of pear drops on the hall table for children who behaved. You were nine and did not behave. Your cousin Nell, seven and officially the sensible one, sat on the stairs and watched you pick the padlock on the bike shed with a hairgrip.

The summer the pier burned, you climbed the cliff path after dark with a torch that kept dying. Nell followed because she always followed, muttering, one fist knotted in the back of your jumper. At the top the wind came off the Atlantic hard enough to lift the hem of your coat. You drew a triangle in the wet sand with your heel and said it was a tent, or a sail, or a mountain, whichever you liked, and that this was where you would be living soon. Nell said the tide would have it by morning. You said that was rather the point.
Years later her letter found you in Glasgow, written on the back of a shipping timetable: I'll keep you wild, if you'll keep me safe. You were a grown woman with rent due and a job gutting herring at the market, and you laughed until you had to sit down on the kerb. A week after that you were in a back room in Penzance with the needle buzzing, and Nell was in the chair beside you, and you had the same black script inked into your skin.
Hers was the tidy line, the one that stayed inside the margins. Yours carried the triangle beneath it, the summit you had scratched into the sand that night. Whenever you pull on a jumper and catch the ink in the mirror, you remember her small fist in your collar, holding on the way she always did, while the wind tried to take you off the edge.
