Mater from Cars on the upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo of the tow truck character Mater from the Cars films, shown front-on with a large toothy grin, green eyes and a hook on his back. The linework is bold and the rust-orange body, blue-grey shading and dark outlines give the figure a soft, rounded three-dimensional look. The character fills most of the frame against plain pinkish skin.

Nobody in the Duchy of Gorse Hollow had ever seen a tow truck laugh until the Tuesday the bridge fell into the river with the mayor's prize marrow still on it. I was the only breakdown wagon in the kingdom, with a hook on my back, a grin that cost me two front teeth to get fixed, and a standing order from Queen Ottoline to pull anything out of anywhere, provided it was not her carriage again.

That Tuesday I hauled the marrow, the mayor, the mayor's goat and a stone troll named Edwin out of the Brackle in one long winch of the cable. Edwin cried. The goat did not. I was very proud of myself until the Queen's steward came galloping down the Gorse road waving a scroll, and it turned out the bridge had been built by her own great-grandfather, who had charged a toll to cross it and hidden the coins under its middle arch.
So the whole kingdom took to digging. The goat dug, the troll dug, the mayor dug in his best waistcoat, and I dragged the spoil heap to the palace gates one gravel load at a time, my green eyes bright with the honest pleasure of work that goes somewhere. By Friday there was a mountain of mud and no coins at all.
The Queen came down to the riverbank herself, looked at the mess, and asked me what I thought. I told her the truth: nobody had ever left a treasure under a bridge that they wanted to find again. She laughed until her crown slid off into the Brackle. I hooked it back out for her, and she has never once asked me to haul her carriage since.
