Dear Ena, you will think I have finally lost my wits, but the cat has been sitting on Frank's good coat every afternoon since the funeral tea, and I have stopped shifting him. The greengrocer's lad calls him Tuesday, though he came with the flat and nobody has ever claimed him. He arrives at four, climbs the banister like a burglar and settles on the wool with his paws tucked under, purring the way Frank used to hum through his teeth when the wireless was on.

I tried the broom on Thursday and he looked at me as if I'd insulted the Queen. So now I put the kettle on for two, and I say meow at the kitchen door, which I know sounds daft, but it gets a look from him every time. Last night I caught myself in the hall mirror doing it properly, one long drawn-out note, and I laughed until I had to sit on the stairs.

The coat will need a proper clean before the spring. I'll take it to Mrs Hale on Lanyon Road, who has never once asked me how I am. Tuesday can keep the warm patch, I think. Frank would have said he'd earned it. Come up at Easter if your knees allow. Bring the good scissors and the cheap sherry, and tell Dennis the cat is not to be fed from the table, whatever he says.
