Metallic gold and teal temporary tattoos on forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a woman's forearm and wrist, with her hand resting against her chin and long blonde hair falling behind her. Several metallic temporary tattoos in gold and teal sit on the skin, including a mandala-style band with a small letter monogram, lace-like filigree, dotted and chain-link bracelets. The soft focus and warm daylight keep the emphasis on the shimmering ink against the skin.

You are the last transfer-printer on the Shoal, a drowned ring of towers where the sea took the lower floors a century ago. Every morning the pumps grind and you sit at the bench with the gold foil and the teal lacquer, pressing patterns onto the wrists of people who come to trade for a day's passage. Nobody here keeps anything permanent. Skin is a ledger you rewrite at each dawn.

The girl who arrives in the grey hour wants a band of mandala, something to show the harbour guards she holds a diving licence. You cut the design from the old stencil book, the one with chain-link margins and lace filigree that your grandmother swore came from a sun-bleached coast nobody remembers. You ask her for a letter to sit at the centre, and she gives you a single one without explanation. You ask whether she wants the dots too. She says yes, all of them, and then, after a pause, the little chains that run down toward the knuckles, where the foil catches the lamp.
When she goes, the bench holds two sheets of foil. You peel the backing from the last one and find the stencil's mirror image of your own name waiting underneath, reversed and patient. You press it to your forearm, rub the gloss flat with the heel of your hand, and wait for the shimmer to settle. Tomorrow the tide will climb another step, and you will need another reason to be seen by the guards. The gold stays bright for a day. That will have to be enough, and you switch off the lamp.
