Mickey Mouse skull on chest

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey tattoo on the chest shows Mickey Mouse's head, with one half of the face transformed into a skull. The rounded ears are shaded as soft grey circles, while the skull has detailed bone texture, teeth and a dark eye socket. The smooth, glossy shading on the cartoon eye and muzzle contrasts with the skeletal side, giving the design strong depth.

Dear Ambrose,

The big top came down in Shrewsbury on Tuesday and it will not go up again. I thought you should hear it from me and not from the handbills, which Mrs Starling has been printing on the backs of old feed sacks since March. The painted banner over the entrance is still with us, the round-eared mouse in white gloves that Father hung there in 1958. A winter of damp got into the canvas and the paint lifted. When I unrolled it in the yard this morning, the face had gone patchy, and where the left half of the muzzle used to be there was a skull, grey and bony, with its teeth showing through the gaps.

Tobias, who is nine and believes everything he is told by a man with a moustache, says it is a sign that we should run off to Wales and become sea monks. Mrs Starling says it is a sign of nothing except that the paint was cheap in 1958. Duchess the lion died in February, and the last of the hoop-boys went home to Leeds with two suitcases and a bad back. We have eleven people, three horses that only pull the caravans now, and a generator that coughs like an old uncle before every performance nobody comes to.

I sat with the banner until the light went, trying to decide whether it was ruined or finally honest. Father always said the mouse was the only one in the company who never got old, and that was the trouble with him. The skull does not look frightening. It looks like someone has been patient with the thing for a long time and is now showing us what was underneath.

I have rolled it up and put it under my cot, where the damp cannot reach it. Come and see it before the caravans are sold at auction. The rest of the show can have the horses, but I want you to have the mouse. Half of him still grins at the door, and the other half has stopped pretending.

Your brother, Frank
