Mickey and Minnie tattoos on two hands
Hand · Black and grey · Photo
Two hands are pressed together, each with a solid black cartoon tattoo of a mouse-eared character in profile. The outlines are bold and simple, with flat black fills and small white highlights on the faces and ears. The photograph is black and white, with soft focus and a plain background that keeps attention on the ink.

You'll remember the one: two little mice with ears like pennies, one in a bonnet and one in a waistcoat, sharing a single apple across eleven drawings. Dad always said the apple was the story and the mice were just the excuse. The boy turned the pages with his thumb, slowly, and when he reached the last drawing, where the mice finally bite the apple together, he laughed out loud and paid double.
After he left I sat under the dripping canvas and thought about Mum's hands on the counter that winter, flat and pressed together to keep the cold out, knuckles touching the way those mice touch noses. I don't know why I'd forgotten that until now.
I've kept back the eleventh page. It's in my coat pocket, folded in four, and it's still dry. Come down Saturday and we'll eat the apple between us, the good Cox's from the Herefordshire man, and I'll tell you what he said about the ears. Love, Nell.
