Cartoon character with banner on upper arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon character sits in an orange armchair, holding a bowl of cherries, with a flat grey and red ribbon banner above reading I APOLOGIZE and another below reading FOR NOTHING. The linework is bold and dark, with flat fills and soft shading on the banners. The design is in full colour, mainly orange, yellow, red and grey, and fills the upper arm with the banners framing the figure.

It offered a service: for one bowl of cherries, Mr Pinnock would deliver an apology to anyone in the village, on any subject, in person. By Saturday half the parish had been apologised to. The butcher was sorry about the sausages. The postman was sorry about the weather. Nobody knew quite what to do with it, and in the end the whole village found itself saying sorry back, just to be polite, until the pub ran out of bitter and the parish council set up a bench for the purpose.
