Milkshake with strawberry and banner on forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A milkshake glass topped with whipped cream, a strawberry and a red straw fills most of the forearm, with a banner across the glass reading BRINGS ALL THE BOYS and THE BOYS. Bold black outlines define the shapes, with soft shading on the glass, cream and banner. Pink, red, green and orange ink dominate against the pale skin and light background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mavis had a tea towel over one shoulder and the last of the Saturday rush still sizzling on the grill when Dot slid the ticket across the counter with a look that meant trouble. "Table six wants the pink one," she said. "Says the one with the strawberry on top. And don't bother with the fancy cherry, they're not that sort."

Mavis knew table six. Three lads from the depot, hair oiled flat, sleeves rolled to the shoulder, and a fourth who kept catching her eye over his coffee. She made the shake the way Walter had taught her before his knees gave out: strawberry syrup first, then vanilla scooped while it was still firm, milk whisked until it stood up on the spoon. The cream went on in a tall, lazy swirl, and she set the strawberry on top with its green leaves fanned out like a little crown.

"Going to be a long night for somebody," Dot said, polishing the chrome.

Mavis carried the glass over with the red straw leaning at a jaunty angle. The three lads went quiet and then loud, all at once, the way boys do when they're pretending they haven't been talking about the girl who makes the shakes. The fourth one, the quiet one, reached for the straw and missed, and the strawberry tipped sideways and slid down the cream like it had somewhere better to be.

"Mind the crown," Mavis said, and set a fresh napkin under his elbow. He laughed, properly, the sort of laugh that turns a table around. She didn't stay to hear what he said next. Dot was already calling her back to the grill, and the bell over the door was going again.
