Moon tattoo on a heel

Dotwork · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A circular moon sits on the back of a bare heel, outlined in a solid black line. The surface is filled with stippled dots in black and grey that suggest craters and texture. The foot rests on a weathered wooden surface against a light, textured wall, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

The snow had shut the pass at Hollin Gate for nine days, and by the ninth night old Mabel Creel had burned the last of the good candles and was counting the turnips twice.

A stranger came up the track with the wind at his back and a sack over one shoulder. He sat by the fire without taking off his boots, and when Mabel asked what was in the sack he said, "The moon, mostly. The part the lake didn't keep." He tipped it onto the table. It was a round stone no wider than a saucer, grey as ash, pitted all over with small dark specks like pepper spilled on paste, and a black rim ran around its edge, worn smooth by a thumb.

"Put it on the sill," he said, "and it will give you the light you need until the thaw. It asks only that one window stays clear of frost so it can see the valley." Mabel did as she was told. That night the room filled with a silver the colour of skimmed milk, enough to mend a net by, enough to see the drifts standing like sleeping sheep. Her husband Tom woke, looked at the stone, and for once asked for nothing.

In the morning the stranger was gone and the table was bare. The stone was only a pebble on the sill with frost furred around it, but the window was clear. Outside, the pass lay open under a pale, full moon, and in the drift by the step there was one set of boot prints that came up the track and simply stopped, as if the walker had stepped up into the sky.
