Mother and baby wrist tattoos with red hearts

Other · Mixed · Photo

The image shows two photographs of wrist tattoos placed side by side. The left tattoo depicts a mother holding a baby in a simple black outline, and the right tattoo shows a seated mother nursing a baby, both with two red heart outlines beside them. The linework is bold and smooth with no shading, and the composition centres each design on the inner wrist.

Dear Phaidra, the kiln by the harbour road cracked again on Tuesday, so I have been painting by the window and my hands smell of wet clay all day. You asked why I have stopped doing the crowded black figures on the red-ware and gone back to bare outlines. Your nephew is the reason, though you will laugh. Last month the widow from the fish-sellers' row brought me a cup her grandson had chipped and asked me to mend it with a picture, something to keep the child in mind while he grows.

I sat with that cup for three evenings before I understood what she wanted. Black slip is no good for shading. It goes on thick or it goes nowhere. So I drew only the edge of a mother bent over a small child, one unbroken line, the way you would draw a handle. Where the line stops, the clay underneath shows through, and that is where the mother's arm and the child's head belong. Beside them I dotted two small hearts in red ochre, because the widow said her daughter-in-law always wanted hearts on everything.

When I finished, the widow ran her thumb along the line and said nothing for a long while. Then she asked what I wanted for it. I told her a jar of your olive oil, and she laughed and said she would bring two. Come at the new moon and see it. The cup sits on the shelf by the door, and the boy who drinks from it is already too big for the picture, but he does not mind. Write soon.
