Mother and child silhouette with Momma on ankle
Ankle · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a solid black silhouette of a figure and a smaller child forming a looping, stylised shape, with a soft pink outline around the design. Beneath it, the word Momma is written in black script with a small red heart at its end. The photo is taken straight on at the ankle against a plain skin background, with the design centred in the frame.

Snow had been falling since noon, and by the time the coach lamps guttered out at the Hollin Gate inn the drifts reached the second step. Agnes Pell counted the candles in the back kitchen. Eleven. Enough if nobody was greedy with them.

The traveller had arrived with her son in a borrowed wool coat, its sleeves rolled three times. He was perhaps seven and had not spoken since the crossroads. His mother, Ruth Ashdown, spoke for both of them, quick and polite, and paid for the room with coins still warm from her palm. Agnes did not ask where they were going. Nobody took the Hollin road in February unless they had nowhere else to be.
On the second night the boy came down to the kitchen with a length of twine wound round his fist. He had been tying knots in it, he explained, one for each time his mother had called him a good lad. He had reached nineteen. Agnes showed him the old trick of looping a line so it could be pulled free from a knot without cutting, and he tried it four times before his fingers stopped shaking.
When the thaw came, the coach road opened like a seam. Ruth left before light, and the boy left the twine coiled on the settle with a single knot still in it, tight and neat. Agnes never learned where they went. She hung the twine on the hook above the range, and in March, when the first cart came up the valley, she untied that last knot, the only one he had not made to be undone.
