Mountain outline and script on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo of a mountain range sits above a line of cursive script that reads 'the mountains are calling'. The peaks are drawn with thin, slightly shaded strokes in dark blue-black ink, and the script is written in a loose, handwritten style beneath them. The tattoo is centred on the upper back against soft, evenly lit skin, with the subject's shoulder and some hair visible at the edges of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The Bramleys came in a fortnight early this year, all at once, as if the trees had made up their minds without asking me. I have had Dad's ladders up every morning since Monday and my shoulders have gone to wood. Mrs Pryce from the cottage brought round a pie on Tuesday and asked after you, and I said you were somewhere over the water with a rucksack and no sense, which she seemed to think was fair.
Your postcard came yesterday, the one with the lake that looks painted. You wrote that the mountains are calling and I should stop being so sensible and come up. I read it three times standing in the packing shed with the smell of windfalls coming through the slats. I know what you mean. I used to think the hills behind the orchard were just a wall to keep the wind off, but you always knew they were a door.
Anyway, the crop is good. Forty bins if the frost stays off, and I have been counting them into the dark like sheep. Come home for the picking if you can, even just a weekend. I have kept the top rung of the old ladder for you, the one with the split you always said was going to kill someone.
Love, Jess
