Fine line tattoo of a mountain range with the script words the mountains are calling on the upper back, below the shoulder blade.

Mountain line and script on upper back

Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A small black tattoo of a mountain ridge sits above a line of cursive script reading the mountains are calling. The mountains are drawn in fine, sketchy linework with light shading on the peaks, and the script is thin and slightly uneven. The photo is taken close up from behind, with soft, even light on pale skin and a blurred background.

The boats came back to Skerra every night for thirty years because of the ridge behind the harbour, which the old men called the Teeth. When the fog sat on the water you could not see the shore, only the dark shape of the peaks standing above it, and they had a way of pulling a man's eye that the sea never managed.

Ansel Marr was the youngest on the Brightwater that autumn, and he did not believe what his grandmother said about the mountains calling. He laughed at the gutted cod on the slip and said a rock cannot speak. The skipper, Oonagh Pell, only told him to keep his hands on the net and his mind on the tide.

The storm came out of the west on a Tuesday. Seven boats were still out past the Corran bank when the light went. Ansel, hauling in the dark, heard it then: not a voice, more a long low note, like wind across a bottle, rising off the peaks. He turned his head, and the ridge was there in a gap of cloud, its line sharp as a pencil stroke. Oonagh had the wheel. She saw him looking, followed his gaze, and steered toward it without a word.

They came in on the white edge of the swell, every boat, and tied up before the sea took the breakwater. Ansel never laughed at his grandmother again. Each morning after, he walked to the end of the pier and read the ridge like a letter, and what it said, he kept to himself.
