Fine line black tattoo of a mountain range above the script words the mountains are calling on skin, placed on the upper shoulder or back.

Mountain range and script quote on shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A single-needle style tattoo of a line-drawn mountain range with four peaks, above handwritten script reading the mountains are calling followed by an ellipsis. The linework is thin and mostly solid with light grey shading on the peaks, and the design sits centred on a plain area of skin against a soft, out-of-focus background.

Dear Tomos,

The pit wheel stopped again on Tuesday, and Mam has taken to sitting by the back window with the kettle going cold beside her. I have read your last card so often the corners have gone soft as flannel, and I know by heart the line where you wrote that the hills out there are bigger than anything the valley can hold.

You asked whether the mountains still look the same from the lower road. They do, though the spoil heap has crept up the flank of Moel Gwyn like a grey tide, and the chapel men have repainted the institute sign twice now without anyone asking them to. Last Sunday I walked up past the old quarry with Dafydd Pritchard's boy, who carries your wooden flask now because nobody else would. From the top you can see the whole range standing in a row, four peaks with the cloud wound round them like wool on a spindle, and I thought of the words you put in the margin of the last letter: the mountains are calling.

I am not going to tell you to come home. I would be a liar, and you would know it by the second line. What I will say is that the wheel stops and starts again, and the hills do not care who is on shift. If the call is as strong as you say, then follow it properly, with boots that fit and a letter sent every month so I know which peak to look at.

Mam says to tell you the kettle is on. It has been on all week, and I think that is her way of keeping a door open. Write soon.

Yours in haste and in hope, Nell
