Mountain range and Isaiah 54:10 on upper arm
Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black mountain silhouette with sharp peaks and shaded ridges sits above the text ISAIAH 54:10 in a clean, upright sans-serif lettering. The ink is uniformly black with no colour, and the design is centred on a smooth area of skin, with a short-sleeved top visible at the top of the frame.

The cloud had come down over Garrow Head again, and Ada Penhallow stood on the harbour wall with the tide ledger under her arm, counting the boats that were still out. Four were in. The Mary Jane was not, and the wind had gone round to the north-east, which meant the bar would be breaking by dark.

Her father had drawn the range across the bay on the back of a chandler's invoice the year before he died, the three peaks with their snow-streaked ridges, and pinned it behind the bar of the Ship Inn where the fishermen could see it while they waited for the weather. He used to say the mountains on the far shore would walk into the sea before the harbour let anyone down. Ada had thought that a joke until the quarry company sent its letter in March, offering good money for the eastern ridge and a plan to take it down to the waterline.
She had signed nothing. Instead she had gone home and found his old pocket Bible, its spine split, and read the tenth verse of the fifty-fourth chapter of Isaiah for the first time in years. For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed, but my kindness shall not depart from thee. Her father had underlined the second half twice in pencil.
The Mary Jane came round the breakwater at a quarter to nine, low in the water, her running lights swinging. Ada took the drawing down from the Ship Inn wall the next morning and carried it home under her coat, and that evening she pinned it above the kitchen sink, where the lamp could reach it.
