Night camp scene with script lettering on upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo sits inside a dotted oval on the upper arm. It shows a starry night sky over mountains, with a crescent moon, a pink tent, a campfire, pine trees and small yellow flowers on a green foreground. The script lettering reads not all who wander are lost, with a bold black outline and smooth blended shading in the sky and hills.

Dear Nell, the tent is still pitched where you left it, though the pegs have rusted and the flysheet has faded to the colour of weak tea. I walked up Glen Mhor on Tuesday with Dad's old stove and the map you laughed at. The bothy warden says nobody has camped on the shelf above the burn since the summer of the flood, so I had the place to myself.

I lit the fire at dusk the way he taught us, birch bark first and two dry sticks crossed like a tent pole. The sky came out in stages, a few stars and then too many to count, and a crescent moon hung over the ridge like a clipped fingernail. I kept thinking of him saying not all who wander are lost, usually when he had just taken us the wrong way up a hill and wanted it to sound deliberate.
In the morning, under the flat stone by the cooking pit, I found a tobacco tin wrapped in a carrier bag. Inside was a folded sheet in his capitals: FOR WHOEVER COMES NEXT. THE CAMP IS SAFE. THE MAP IS RIGHT EVEN WHEN THE PATH ISN'T. Underneath, in your handwriting, from the year you were twelve, someone had added: NOT LOST, JUST SLOW.
So I'm not lost. I'm exactly where he meant me to be, with the good matches and the stove that still sulks until you hit it. Come up when the lambs are out. Bring the map. We'll argue about the path, and then we'll find the fire.
