Yellow daffodil tattoo on a calf

Botanical · Calf · Colour · Photo

A yellow and orange daffodil-style flower with a red-orange centre sits on the lower leg. The petals use soft, blended shading with pale highlights and deeper orange edges, giving a painted, watercolour-like finish. The bare leg fills the left of the frame against a plain white background, with a brown patterned bag at the right edge.

The humidity dial in the bulb cellar of the Ceres greenhouse has been stuck at sixty-one for nine days, and you are the only one who still walks down the ladder to check it. Tomas calls it sentiment. You call it tending. Behind the racks sits a cracked brown leather case, the kind a travelling salesman carried before the rains stopped, its lining still printed with coastlines from a world nobody aboard has seen. Your grandmother brought it up in the last supply lift with her hands full of paperwork and a promise she never explained.

Inside are twelve bulbs wrapped in newsprint dated the year before the seal. Eleven have gone to paste. The twelfth put out a pale green spike in the third week of your watch, and then, yesterday, a bloom: six petals the colour of old butter, deepening to orange at the tips as if someone had dipped them in the lamplight, with a red-gold cup at the centre. The mess hall has not seen yellow since the algae tanks were moved forward. People come down to the cellar just to stand near it and say nothing.

The council wants the cellar for protein vats by the next turn. Tomas says the bulb is one dead plant, and he is not wrong, but you carry the case up the ladder anyway, past the sealed hatches and the cold corridors, and set it on the mess hall table beside the window where the rings of Saturn turn slowly over the hull. A girl of about seven, whose name you have never learned, leans over the flower and asks what colour the sun is. You tell her it is this colour, on a good day, and she nods as if that settles a matter for her.
