Outline house on the ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line outline of a simple house, with a pitched roof, a chimney and a small door, sits on the side of a bare foot above the heel. The linework is thin and even, in solid black ink with no shading. The foot rests on a red carpet against a cream wall, with the trouser hem visible above the ankle.

Old Maud of Hallow Dene always said a house was only a house once someone had walked round it at night. So when the miller's son asked for Bessie Crane's hand, her father set him a task before the wedding. He must raise the walls of their home with his own hands, every stone of it, and roof it before the bells rang on Saturday.

Tom had three days and one borrowed cart. He had the walls up by Thursday, lopsided, the chimney leaning over the lane like a tired man at a gate. On Friday night the rain came sideways off the moor and tore half the thatch away. He sat in the mud with his palms split and his good coat ruined, and he thought the old man had been wiser than he let on.
Bessie came down the lane with a lantern and a dry shawl. She did not say anything clever. She took a hazel stick from the hedge and scratched a shape into the wet earth, one unbroken line: a pitched roof, a chimney, a small door. "Walk it," she said. "Round the outline, and don't lift your foot. That's the house. The rest is only wood and wet."
He walked it until the sky greyed over the moor. When he came back to the door she had already set the lantern on the step, and the thatch, somehow, was dry.
