Owl and fox tattoos on the feet

Other · Colour · Photo

Bare feet show two illustrated tattoos: a brown and grey owl on the upper left foot and an orange, red and black fox on the right foot. The fox is drawn with bold, flat blocks of colour and simple shading, while the owl uses softer outlines and muted tones. The subjects sit centrally on pale skin against a light background, with a circular overlay partly covering the image.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The snow had come over the pass before the carts did, so the fox was the only traveller at the toll-hut when the owl pulled the shutters closed. He owed three measures of lamp oil and a mule bell he had not meant to take. The owl did not raise its voice. It only turned the ledger round on the sill so the fox could see the column of small marks, one for every winter he had crossed Hollin Gap without paying.

Pay it, said the owl, or carry this ledger down to Mardale before the thaw and leave it on the church step unread. The fox agreed, because agreeing was quicker than arguing with an owl, and because he could read well enough to know what a ledger was for. He tucked it under his arm and went down through the frozen larches in the dark. Halfway, his lamp showed him his own name written beside a drowned ewe, a broken gate, and a child's sled left at the top of the scree.

At the church step he stopped and read every page by the light of his own lamp, which he had bought with his share of the oil. Then he tore out the page with his name on it, chewed it slowly as the owl would have done with a mouse, and left the rest in a neat pile for the priest to find.

Above him on the pass, a small grey shape lifted from the toll-hut roof and turned its head to watch the lamp go out in the valley.
