Black fine line tattoo of a cartoon owl on a branch with the script words owl love you forever along the side of an ankle and foot.

Owl on a branch with script quote on foot

Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon owl sits on a thin branch at the left, followed by the script phrase owl love you forever, which runs along the outer side of the foot towards the ankle. The linework is thin and even, with the word love set in a larger, looping script than the smaller lettering around it. The ink is dark grey to black on a light skin tone, against a pale textured background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have been the night clerk at the Owl Post on Tycho Relay for eleven years, and the owls have never once looked at you with anything but contempt. Hettie, the grey barn owl who handles the station's outbound mail, grips the rail with one foot and watches you the way a magistrate watches a man who has lied. Tonight she has a sealed cylinder tied to her leg and a bad mood.

The cylinder is addressed in the looping capitals of your sister on Ceres Dock, who signs every message with a line you have been mocking since you were children. You break the seal with your thumb. Inside is a single strip of print paper, the kind the old ration printers still spit out, and four words in her hand: owl love you forever. Underneath, smaller: Hettie says hello. She is lying.

You laugh so hard the lamp swings. Hettie ruffles and makes a sound like a rusty hinge. You tell her it is a soppy sentiment, the sort of thing people scratched onto their sleeves before the orbital levy, and she blinks slowly, unimpressed, because she has carried four thousand of these between the moons and knows exactly how much each one weighs.

You write back on the reverse of the strip, in the smallest letters the printer allows: owl love you too. Then you tie it to her leg, open the hatch onto the dark, and watch her drop past the window towards Ceres, a grey shape shrinking against the stars until she is only a pale mark, then nothing, and the air smells of cold metal and somebody else's kindness.
