Paw print with heart on a wrist

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small paw print design on the inner wrist, with four toe pads above a larger main pad. A small heart is set within the main pad, and the design is rendered in a simple, solid form. The ink reads as pale or white against the skin, with a faint pink flush around the edges, and the background is softly out of focus.

The Morwenna came back to Porthgarrow an hour late, and Ross Tremayne was the first off her, rope still burning his palms. Biscuit was waiting where she always waited, on the cold iron bollard by the fish market, her grey muzzle lifted into the wind. She didn't bark when the boat came in. She only thumped her tail twice against the stone, the way she did when she'd counted everyone and nobody was missing.

Ada Penhallow tied off the stern line and swore at the engine, and the men went up the steps to the Sailors' Rest in a loose, tired line. Ross stayed behind. The new slipway had been poured that week, and the concrete was still soft enough to take a print. Someone had left a trail across it, four toes and a broad pad, going down to the water's edge and back again. In the middle of the pad a limpet shell had been pressed in, point up, like a small stone heart.

He knew whose prints they were. Biscuit had been out on the wall at dawn, before the tide turned, watching the bay for a boat that had been late before. He crouched and looked at the marks until the light went grey and the gulls had settled on the harbour wall.

He didn't smooth them over with his boot, as the harbourmaster would have wanted. He left them for the tide to take in its own time, and went up the steps to tell Ada the day's catch had been good, and that the dog had waited up for them.
