A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The flour bin split in the second week out of Liverpool, and by the time I came off the morning watch there was a trail of it across the galley boards, five toes and a broad pad, running from the stove to the companionway as though someone had been stamping bread dough all the way to the door. It was Tansy, of course. Our collie-cross had the same left hind foot she always had, with a pale patch in the middle of the pad that the flour showed up plain. Cook swore at her, then swept the lot up and left the rest to the dog.

The weather turned off the Horn. For three days the Corrin Vale lay over so far that the cabin lamps swung level with the deck, and nobody slept more than an hour at a stretch. On the fourth night Tansy went missing. The bosun said dogs always know before the men do, and that she'd gone to ground somewhere dry. I didn't believe him, but I didn't believe the sea either, so I went looking with a lamp and the wet on my hands.

Her prints led me forward, up through the fo'c'sle hatch, across the slick planking to the sail locker. They were faint in the salt but I could still see the heart-shaped pale mark each time she set her left hind foot down. She was curled in the gap behind the spare topsail, shaking, and when I lifted her she licked the back of my hand as if I were the one who needed comforting. We rode out the rest of the blow in there together, and when the sun came up over a flat grey sea she was asleep on my coat, with a fine dusting of flour still stuck to her foot.
