Pine tree on upper arm

Botanical · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A single tall conifer, drawn in black ink with a slim trunk and layered, feathery branches that taper to a point. The shading is built from fine dots and short strokes, giving the tree soft grey tones within the dark outline. The tree sits centrally on the outer upper arm against a plain background, with the wearer's face and head cropped out of frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You remember the spring the Hollis boys cut down the wrong tree. It was the last week of April in Pell Corner, and the whole town had come out to watch the sawmill men argue over a plot of land nobody had surveyed since the war. You stood at the fence with your brother's cap in your hands and counted the rings as they fell, forty-one, forty-two, the wood pale and sweet-smelling as bread. Your father said a tree that old had seen three winters of weather before anyone thought to write it down.

That evening you walked out past the boundary stones to the one they had missed, a single conifer standing alone on the rise above the creek. Its branches went down in layers like the skirts of a dress, each tier narrowing until the top was nothing but a point against the sky. You sat under it until the light went blue and the dogs in the village started up. You had a pencil stub and the back of a ration book, and you tried to draw it the way the dusk was drawing it, not with lines but with a thousand small marks, dots and quick strokes, so that the dark would have some grey in it.

You went back to Pell Corner in the morning with the paper folded in your pocket. Nobody asked what you had been doing out there. Years later, when the new road came through and the rise was levelled for a petrol station, you still had the drawing, softened at the creases, and you could still find the place on it where the shadow was deepest, which was the place where you had decided to stay.
