Pink peony tattoo on forearm

Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A large peony bloom fills the frame, with layered, ruffled petals drawn in outline and shaded in pinks and mauves. The shading gives the petals depth and a soft, realistic volume, and the flower sits centrally on the forearm against a blurred blue background. A strip of clear plastic wrap is visible at the bottom edge.

Nell had counted the peonies twice in the cool room at five that morning, two hundred and twelve stems, every one of them still tight as a fist. "They'll open when they're ready," Mr Pryce had said at the wholesaler's, which was no use to a woman with a village hall to dress by four.

By noon the buds had begun to loosen, the outer petals unfurling like the pages of a letter read too many times. Ants crawled over the sepals, as they always did, and she brushed them off with the side of her hand while the caterer shouted for more trestle tables. The bride's mother wanted the tables pink. The bride wanted the arch to look as though it had grown there. Nell wanted a cup of tea and five minutes sitting down.

At half past three she pulled the last bloom from the box, a fat one the colour of a boiled sweet, and found it already open, its ruffles spilling out like a skirt. She had no vase left for it. So she wired it into the buttonhole of the groom's grandfather, a man in a borrowed suit who had been sitting alone by the door looking at his shoes.

He lifted it to his nose and said nothing for a while. Then he said his wife had carried peonies down the aisle in 1961, and that she would have scolded the florist for the ants. Nell laughed, and the old man laughed too, and for the length of a song the hall smelled of nothing but flowers and floor polish and pink.
