Pink baby triceratops with flowers and RAWR lettering

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon baby triceratops with a pink body, lilac horns and frill, and large expressive eyes sits at the centre. It is surrounded by yellow and orange flowers, green leaves, a pale blue wash and small outlined hearts, with the word RAWR written in bold black lettering underneath. Thick black outlines and soft shading give the design a bright, playful look against lightly tanned skin.

Rain drummed on the canopies of Crowther Street market and ran in grey ribbons off the edge of Nell Brannigan's trestle table. She had three cardboard boxes of secondhand toys, a tin of loose buttons, and one plastic dinosaur that nobody had wanted since March. It was pink, the colour of boiled sweets, with lilac horns and a frill like a paper fan, and its eyes were far too big for its face.

"You're still here," said Dev from the fishmonger's next door, shaking water off his apron. "Nobody buys dinosaurs in this weather." Nell turned the little triceratops over in her hands and wiped a smear of damp off its nose with her sleeve. She had already decided it would go in the bin behind the chip shop at four o'clock, along with the Polaroids and the sticker books and everything else that had outlived its owners.

A girl in a yellow mac stopped at the table, her hood dripping onto her wellies. She pressed her nose almost to the box and studied the dinosaur with the seriousness of a magistrate. "Does it roar?" she asked.

"Only when it's raining," Nell said. The girl considered this, then opened her mouth wide and bellowed, "RAWR," so loudly that a man selling phone cases dropped a charger. The pink dinosaur, sitting in the wet cardboard, seemed to grin at the noise.

Nell took the pound coin the girl offered, though the price on the sticker said two. At four o'clock she packed the boxes into her car and found the tin of buttons in her coat pocket, the pound coin rattling against them. The yellow mac had gone down the hill towards the bus stop, and the rain kept coming, and somewhere in the back seat a pink dinosaur was no longer for the bin.
