Every spring the hare in the pink hood came down from the hawthorn and sat on the step of the bakehouse, paws folded as if she were waiting to be asked a question. Old Marta gave her the crusts. In return the hare kept the wolves off the sheep on the far side of the beck, though nobody in Mellow Cross could say how.

One March the flour went bad, and Marta's grandson Piet was sent up the fell road to find the miller's cart. The mist came down thick as wool. He walked until the stones under his boots turned to bog and the lantern guttered to a blue bead. Then he saw a light ahead: a pale shape sitting in the heather, a blue bow tied at its ear, and a dozen red hearts hanging in the air like lamps.

"You are lost," said the hare. It was not a question. "Give me your bread and I will give you the road." Piet had only a heel of rye and a bit of string. He gave her the rye. She tore it in half, pressed one piece into his palm, and turned three times on her heel. The mist lifted, and the cart stood in the ruts below him, its wheel wrapped in a loop of blue ribbon.

Marta found pink hearts pinned to her door the next morning, bright as cut apples. The hare never came back for crusts after that. Only the bow stayed, tied to the gatepost, and no one in Mellow Cross ever cut it free.
