Pinky and the Brain cartoon tattoo on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon mice from the Pinky and the Brain series are tattooed on the calf: one stands with a paw raised beside a red-nosed speech label reading NARF, and the other holds a green and blue globe. The year 1988 sits centred below them. The linework is bold and black with flat, solid colour fills in orange, blue, green and red, with the figures placed side by side across the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Every night the big mouse stood on the cabin roof of the barge Mercy and told the river what he meant to do with the world. His name was Oswin, and he had a plan, and the plan always began with the same words: a globe, a lever, and the locks of the Trent. His friend Tobin, who was small and pink about the ears and had never once been asked to keep a secret, sat on the coal bunker eating biscuits and said narf whenever he was pleased.

Their mother had kept the boat for forty years before the mice came aboard, and she had left them the stove, the coiled rope and a brass globe that wobbled on its stand. Oswin wanted the globe. He wanted to hold it under one paw the way the old captain had held his pipe, turn it slowly, and say which country was next. Tobin wanted biscuits and a warm place to sleep. When Oswin asked for his opinion, Tobin always said narf, and Oswin took that as agreement.

One wet autumn Oswin rolled the globe off the gunwale and into the dark water, and for a week he would not speak. Tobin went out at dawn in the rowing skiff, leaned over the side with a boathook, and fished for it while the rain ran off his whiskers. When he came back with the globe streaming under one arm, Oswin was sitting on the stove with his face in his paws.

"You could have drowned," Oswin said.

"Narf," said Tobin, and set the wet world down at his feet.
