A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Thaddeus had lost his tail for the third time since Easter, and the gardener had said nothing about it except that the mower was not to be blamed. He sat by the rhubarb with his legs stuck out in front of him, the way he always sat when he was feeling sorry for himself, and looked at the grey sky as if it had personally let him down.

Hattie found the tail under the washing line on Saturday, wrapped in a snail's trail and a dead leaf. She carried it over with both hands, the way you carry something that might still be warm. "It was by the water butt," she said. "Mum says you have to be more careful, because the tail is a bit loose."

He did not answer. A donkey who has been let down by the weather, the mower and his own stitching does not rush to answer children. But she sat down on the warm paving slab beside him anyway and pushed the pin through carefully, and then she unfolded a red ribbon from her pocket, the one left over from the birthday parcel, and tied it into a bow near his hind leg.

"There," she said. "Now you look like you're going somewhere."

He thought about this for a long time, the way he thought about most things. The sun came out over the shed roof, slow and thin, and the rhubarb leaves began to steam. Hattie was already halfway to the back door, calling out about tea, and the bow sat bright against the flagstones like a small thing that had decided to be cheerful on his behalf.
