Pixel hearts and a lettered wrist tattoo
Forearm · Mixed · Photo
Two red pixel-art hearts with black stepped outlines sit on the inner forearm and the wrist of a light-skinned arm. Below the upper heart on the wrist, the words Allons-y are written in black script lettering. The hearts are filled with flat red ink with soft shading, and the photo is taken outdoors against a blurred green background.

Dear Hal,

The rain has got into the stall again. Every Saturday since spring I've laid out the tea towels with their little grids of red hearts, and every Saturday the card on the trestle goes soft at the corners before noon. Mr Pritchard from the veg stall says I should laminate them. I told him a heart is only a heart if it's allowed to fade a bit.
The one that sold yesterday went to a boy of about nine who wanted the pixels bigger. He counted the steps along the edge with his finger and told me the heart was broken on purpose, one corner missing so something could still get in. I didn't have the heart to tell him that was your idea, the missing corner, from the night we sat in the bus shelter on Mill Road with the last of the chips and you said we should be a game nobody finished.
You said it then, standing up when the 4:15 came round the bend with its lights smeared across the wet tarmac: Allons-y. Daft word, borrowed off a man in a blue box. I've been saying it under my breath every morning since, as if walking out into weather were a plan.
I've put the spare heart in an envelope with this letter. Red card, cut with your scissors, which I took from your flat when I should have given them back. Stick it somewhere the rain can't reach. If you come up on Saturday, I'll be the one under the orange awning, pretending not to watch the road.
