Pizza slices in a circle on an arm

Traditional · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A pizza sliced into eight wedges sits in a rounded circle, each slice topped with dark red pepperoni and dripping cheese. The design uses bold black outlines with flat areas of orange, yellow and red fill and a darker crust edge. The composition fills the frame tightly against a plain background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody in Marrowby Cross could say for certain who first cut the pie into eight, only that it was Ada Pell's grandmother who kept the knife afterwards and would not let anyone else touch it. The wheel had come out of her brick oven on a Sunday in the hard winter, a great round thing with the cheese gone bubbling and the pepperoni set like coins in a purse, and the men of the town stood in the cold yard waiting for it to cool enough to lift.

She cut it the old way, blade drawn toward her and a word under her breath. Eight wedges came apart and sat on the board in a ring, each one leaning a little toward the next, as if they remembered being one thing. Cheese ran off the edges and hardened into ropes that the children pulled and sucked. Nobody took a slice. They stood there, the whole of Marrowby Cross, looking at the ring, while the wind came up off the fields and rattled the shutters of the feed store.

Her grandson, Leon, the one who had gone to the city and come back smelling of motor oil, picked up the nearest wedge and tried to press it against its neighbour. It would not stick. The crust was too dry and the grease too quick to set. He tried again and the slice slid off onto the board with a clack. Ada's grandmother laughed until she had to sit on the step, and the town understood then that the pie was not going to be eaten until somebody said plainly what they had all been wanting.

So they ate it standing in the yard, each wedge carried hand to hand around the ring until the board was bare. Nobody mentioned the cut again, and the cheese on their fingers went cold and sweet in the wind.
