Pepperoni pizza slice with In Crust We Trust

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A bold pepperoni pizza slice with cheese drips fills most of the frame, with the words IN CRUST WE TRUST in black block lettering across the top. The design uses thick black outlines, flat orange, yellow and red fills and simple highlights on the pepperoni. A small black and grey bird outline sits in the lower right corner, and the skin tone and surrounding area are shown in a close crop.

Last night Mr Okafor from the chemist said my slice tasted like the old place on Carver Street, and I did not correct him, because that is the best thing a man can say about a crust.

Dad painted the sign over the door himself, IN CRUST WE TRUST, and the lettering leaned so badly that Mum said the whole shop looked like it was walking into a gale. We never fixed it. Each morning I stand under it with the peel in my hand while the window greys, and I think of you at seventeen, scraping the edges of every pie to see if it was ready, convinced that ready was somewhere else.

The van keys are still on the hook by the back door, the one with the faded tag you wrote in capitals. Come home for Friday. Eat the first slice standing at the counter, the way you always did, with the grease running to your wrist and the pepperoni curling at the edges like little red coins. Bring the dog if you must, and bring whatever you are carrying. The dough is already rising and will not wait for either of us, and neither, Marguerite, will the sun. Love, Sal.
