Pizza slice in a heart with banner on the thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A pizza slice with melted cheese dripping from its point and three small red hearts on the crust sits inside a pink heart. The word LOVE arches above, and a banner reading AT FIRST SLICE curls beneath, with bold black outlines and flat fills. A partly visible red rose tattoo sits at the top left of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mind the lift, it sticks between the sixth and seventh, so hold your breath and your pizza both. That's where Kieran Doyle found himself on a wet Thursday, wedged in with a family-size box, a bag of garlic bread and a ten-minute promise he had no chance of keeping. He was delivering to flat 14C, where a woman called Dolores Quarrie had been waiting since half seven with her door on the chain and her patience on a short lead.

When the lift finally shuddered up, he went down the walkway at a jog and the box lid flapped open. Out slid a single slice, the cheese still dripping off its point, and it landed in the crook of her arm as if somebody had aimed it. She looked at the slice. He looked at the slice. She said it was a sign, and she was not joking, and that was the start of it. Every Thursday after, she ordered one slice, just the one, and he carried it up himself, because a slice that important could not be trusted to anybody else.

Eventually she took the stairs down to meet him at the bottom, which nobody on the fourteenth floor had done since the caretaker retired. Years later they still argue about whose idea the banner was. Dolores says the chippy on Cobden Road painted it on their shutter as a joke. Kieran swears it was him. The lift, I can tell you, still sticks between the sixth and seventh. Hold your breath and your pizza both.
