Hello Kitty with stars on an arm

Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Hello Kitty character in white with black outlines, a red bow and a yellow nose, sits in a pose with a red and blue outfit. The character is outlined in bold black linework, with flat fills inside the outline. Behind it, a soft watercolour-style wash of red, orange, yellow, green and blue fills the background, scattered with small outlined stars in matching colours.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Dot, The ovens were already ticking when I came in at half four, and Mr Okafor had wedged the back door open with a tin of lard the way he always does, so the cold rolls straight through to the proving room. I'm writing this on the back of a delivery docket because the notepad has gone missing again. You'll laugh, but I found something on the shelf above the rye flour: a little white cat with a red bow, sitting cross-legged and clutching a swirly pink lollipop as if someone had promised her the last one in Leeds.

Nell, the apprentice, says it's a sticker off her gran's old biscuit tin, the one with the painted stars. She stuck it to the flour bin in March and nobody noticed until the flour started going grey around the edges, which is the only reason anyone looks at anything here. Nell swears the cat has been keeping an eye on the dough since. I told her the cat has never once seen a sourdough starter go wrong, and she told me that's exactly why she's qualified.

By six the van drivers were lined up at the hatch, rubbing their hands, and I gave the first of them a cinnamon knot and a lollipop from the jar Nell keeps under the till. He asked where the kitty came from and I said the flour bin, and he said that was a daft place for a cat, and I said so was a bakery at four in the morning, and we both agreed that was fair.

When the sun finally came up over the car park, the light caught the stars painted on the flour bins and the whole back wall went blue and gold and red. I thought of you standing at the tram stop in your good coat, so I've put a knot aside for Sunday. Come early. The cat will want her lollipop back, but I'm not giving it to her.

Love, Ruth
