Puzzle pieces with a Superman shield and lily
Lettering · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Two interlocking puzzle pieces sit at the centre of the design, the left one blue with a red and yellow Superman-style shield and the right one purple with a pink lily and a small gold crown above it. Script lettering reading Unique Different above and Not less below frames the pieces, with the small letters XYY placed at the upper left. The bold black outlines and flat fills of colour are centred on the wrist and lower forearm, shown in a close, straight-on photograph.

Sit closer, the fire's the only warm thing in Hobb's Rest tonight, and the snow will keep you here till Thursday whether you like it or not. You want the tale of the two pieces from the bottom of the jumble box? Everyone in this valley knows it, though none will admit they took the wrong one home.

There was a jigsaw of the whole harbour at Wennock, a thousand pieces sold in a wooden box to the Sayers girl, who sorted them by colour, found the edges, and grew cross when the sky wouldn't come together. Two pieces never fitted anywhere. One was blue as a winter sea and had a red shield pressed on its face, bright as a fire engine, with a yellow hem to it. The other was purple, with a pink lily opening in its middle and a little gold crown perched above, as if the lily had crowned itself out of spite.
The girl tried them in every gap. The sky would not take them. The boats would not take them. Her brother said throw them out, her mother said the box had a hole in its base and they'd fallen through, and the old men on the quay said the sea had sent them back. But the blue one kept sliding across the table toward the purple one every time the lamp was lit, as if it had somewhere to be.
Then one wet March night the Sayers girl laid them edge to edge without looking, and they clicked, the shield against the lily, the crown leaning over the water. Nobody finished the harbour that winter. They framed the two pieces and hung them by the door, and that's why there's a crooked frame over our hatch, and why the crown is always the first thing you see when you come in out of the snow. Now pour yourself another, and mind the draught.
