Fine line script tattoo on the upper chest reading a quote in two lines, with a small blue police box beside it.

Quote and TARDIS on the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Colour · Photo

A handwritten script quote in two lines runs across the upper chest, followed by a small blue police box outline with a dark roof lamp and windowed panels. The lettering is thin, dark and even, with the blue ink giving the small icon a noticeably different tone from the text. The soft, warm lighting and close framing keep the tattoo as the clear focus of the photo.

Iris Pardoe found the box on a Tuesday, wedged between the rhubarb and the compost heap, its little lamp on top dusty as an old pudding basin. Nobody in Hebden Lane had planted it. When she rapped the blue panel twice with her trowel, the door opened and a tall, thin man stepped out in a coat too long for him. He asked her, very politely, whether the carrots were up yet.

She told him they were not, and that he was standing on her onions. He apologised, and then they talked over the fence like two people who had been waiting years for the chance. He said he kept the box for lost things that wander into gardens: a dropped wedding ring, a grandchild's kite, a widower's temper. He had been to the moon and back twice, he said, and found the moon overrated and the back lovely.

Iris had buried her husband Cyril that spring. She had not decided what to do with his allotment, his tools, or the sentences she had been saving up to say to him. The man listened to all of it, then tapped the side of the box. 'We're all stories in the end,' he said. 'Just make it a good one, eh?' She told him that was easy for a man with a shed bigger on the inside. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the water butt.

When the box faded back into the hedge that evening, it left a packet of runner bean seed on the path. On the back, in handwriting that was not Cyril's, someone had written a list of places to go. Iris sowed the beans along the fence that week, and by August the vines had climbed past the gutters. She kept the packet in her apron pocket and every morning she added a line to her own story.
