Quote tattoo on the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a side torso showing a black lettering tattoo in serif type, reading 'And though she be but little, she is fierce' over three lines. The word 'fierce' is set larger in bold italic, and the solid black ink has crisp edges with slight softening. The skin is warmly lit against a blurred blue water background, and the wearer's black bikini top is visible above the tattoo.

She is smaller than your two fists. You kneel in straw that smells of iodine and wet wool and feed her with a teat you have boiled on the Rayburn. She butts your wrist with a force that startles you, then braces her legs and refuses to lie down. Every hour you go back to the pen. Every hour she is still there, bleating at a mother who won't look at her.
By February she has become a bossy, stubborn creature who shoulders the bigger lambs off the hay rack and stands on the feed trough to bellow at the collie. Bramble, the old dog, gives up the argument and lets the lamb sleep against her flank. Your father watches from the gate with his pipe unlit and says nothing, which from him is praise.
In March the man from the market leans over the rail at the spring sale, looks her up and down, and laughs. Scrap, he says, and reaches for her ear. She stamps once, hard, on the boards beside his boot. He steps back without being asked.
