Realistic child portrait on a calf
Realism · Calf · Colour · Photo
A realistic portrait of a young child in a dark t-shirt and beaded necklace, wearing a bandana with a skull motif and with dark marks drawn on the face. The skin tones, hair and eyes are shaded smoothly, with soft blended colour across the face and a blurred background behind the figure. The portrait fills the length of the leg, with a small name card on the shirt and a red bead bracelet at the bottom edge of the frame.

Dear Maureen, you will not believe what the Pemberton boys have done to the Bramley rows this August. They have declared the orchard the Sea of Mislaid Fruit and elected themselves a crew, with a captain of six called Teddy Ashdown who insists on being addressed as Captain Teddy, Scourge of the Windfall. He wears a black bandana with a skull on it that his mother tied on this morning, and he has not taken it off since, not even for his bath.

Every afternoon he marches the others down to the old wall, blackens his cheeks with burnt cork from the bonfire heap, and makes me swear on the apples that I will not tell the vicar. I have sworn. I have also let him keep the ladder, which is why I am writing with a sunburnt neck and a bruised shin. His mother pinned a card to his jumper before the church fete, his name and our address in her neat capitals, in case he wandered off. He treats it as a letter of marque and shows it to every stranger who passes the gate.
Yesterday the crew came back without a single apple and with a paper sack of wild plums they swore were gold doubloons. Teddy stood on the mounting block and announced that the sea had given up its treasure and he would be keeping the lot, then gave a third of it to the smallest girl because she had cried. I watched him do it and thought of Father, who never once shared a plum in his whole life.
Come up on the Saturday train. Bring the good knife and your reading glasses, and don't let him see you laugh at the cork. He will want you to walk the plank across the water butt, and I would very much like to watch you do it.
