Heartbeat line and script phrase on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A heartbeat trace, drawn as a single black line with sharp peaks, runs across the forearm and flows into cursive script reading l'amour fou. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black against the skin. The photograph is taken straight on, with the tattoo centred across the lower half of the arm.

Mrs Agnes Rowe found the roll of paper under the bed in Room Four three weeks after the Frenchman had left without settling his account. It was thick as a loaf and printed in faint blue squares, and when she unrolled it across the kitchen table the peaks rose and fell like the outline of a coast she had never visited.

Her lodger, Luc Varenne, had sat at the front window every evening with a violin case he never opened, and he had talked about a hospital in Lyon where he was once wheeled in on a trolley with wires stuck to his chest. The machine that drew this trace had belonged to a cardiograph clerk who was his cousin. Along the bottom margin, in soft pencil, he had written two words, crossed them out, and written them again in a looser hand.
In the middle of the strip there was a long flat stretch where the needle drew nothing at all. Agnes counted the squares and made it about four seconds. Then the peaks came back, sharp as a gull's beak. She thought of the clock on the mantel, the ferry that had come in that morning, and the way she had shouted up the stairs at half past six for him to come down to his supper before it went cold.
She folded the paper into quarters and put it in the bread bin, because nothing else in the house was the right shape. When the next lodger asked about the odd scroll on the table, she said it was a map of somebody's nerve, and that the room was let again from Monday.
