Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A pen drawing on paper shows a rose at the upper left, a heart with a central stitched seam, and a thorned vine wrapping around the heart and stem. The phrase Please stay forever with me is written in hand-lettered capitals and script across the composition. The linework is bold and uniform in black on a pale background, with no shading or colour.

The brass tap over the galley sink had dripped since Tuesday, and I still hadn't found a spanner that fitted it, so I kept a folded tea towel under the spout and counted the drops while the potatoes boiled. Eleven hours out from Milford and the swell had the pans sliding off their hooks every time the hull leaned over.

Dai had left his oilskin on the peg by the door, the left sleeve split along the seam where a gurnard fin had caught it. I sat on the bench with the coat across my knees and a sailmaker's needle, pushing waxed thread through the canvas in small, tight stitches, the way my mother taught me on the church kneeler. In my breast pocket was the card Nell had pressed into my hand on the quay at Holyhead. Please stay, it said, forever, with me. She had written it in pencil, and the rain on the dock had smudged the middle of it until the word forever ran into the word with.

The skipper's voice came crackling down from the wheelhouse saying we'd turn for home at first light, weather or no weather. I bit the thread and tied it off. Dai would have a face on him about the sleeve, but the seam held when I tugged it, and I thought I could hold a thing together that way for a while if I kept at it.

I hung the oilskin back on its peg, left the galley light on for the boys coming off watch, and put Nell's card in the tin with the spare thread. Outside, the drip kept going, one drop and then the next, and I let it.
