Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A three-panel collage shows a matching set of script tattoos reading 1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3 on different areas of a foot. The numerals and lettering are in black ink with clean, even linework, and each design has a small heart in blue or pink. The panels are arranged with the largest text at the top and the two smaller photos below, with a plain light background and skin tones dominating the frame.

The frost had already taken the first blossom when Hester sent the boy up the lane with three slips of old pear wood wrapped in wet sacking. Each one carried a lead tag cut from a tin roof and pricked with a nail. The first read 1 of 3, the second 2 of 3, and the third, the smallest, read 3 of 3 with a heart punched beside it, because the widow who gave them said the last cutting always needed the most loving.

The boy's name was Tobias Wren and he was ten, and he carried them the whole way without once looking inside the sacking. At the orchard wall he planted the first slip in the north corner where the sun came late, and the second beside the well where the bucket dripped. The third he kept inside his coat until his fingers were warm, then pushed it into the bed under the kitchen window, where Hester could see it from her chair.
Only the third took. The first two sulked through the summer, grey-barked and bare, and the boy checked them each morning with the same dread. Hester told him a tree is a promise made slowly, and a promise kept in one place rarely wanders. He did not understand her until October, when the young pear under the window dropped its first fruit into his hands and he saw the tag had been turned to face the house.
He carried the pear inside and set it on the sill beside her cup. 'Two more to go,' she said, and tapped the lead with one crooked finger. Outside, the north corner stayed quiet, but he went to it every morning anyway, counting aloud the way she had taught him, one, two, three, until the number came out even.
