Script lettering on the top of a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a foot with the words Kacham Cie written in thin black cursive script across the top. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black ink and no shading or colour. The foot fills most of the frame against a dark red textured carpet, and the toenails are painted teal.

You have sorted the post in Harrowmere for thirty-one winters, in the stone house by the bridge where the mountain kingdom keeps its last working clock. Nothing comes to the house without a stamp, so when an envelope appears under the door before dawn, its wax seal cracked clean across, you turn it over twice before you open it.

Inside there is a single line in careful, looping hand: Kocham Cię. No name, no direction. The paper smells of pine tar and warm bread. Ansel, who runs the lake ferry, swears it came across Lantern Lake on the night boat, carried by a girl who would not give her name and asked only that it be read by someone who still wrote slowly enough to mean it.
You take it up the mountain road in the rain, past the shuttered mill and the bell that has not rung since the flood. At the top stands a cottage with a blue door and a woman sweeping wet leaves from her step. She reads the envelope, then looks past you toward the grey water below, and says the words were never meant for her. They were meant for whoever stood at the bottom of the road that morning, watching the boat go out.
You walk back down with the envelope still in your coat. At the post house you open the ledger, find the first blank line, and copy the three words in your own hand, then write beside them the date and the weather. Nobody will ever ask for it. The kingdom keeps its records anyway, and so, now, do you.
