The fog came in off the sound at six that October, thick as wet wool, and by seven she could not see the railings at her own elbow.

Her father had taught her the trick. Keep your boot on the line and never mind the sea. She stepped out with the paraffin lantern held low and counted under her breath, while the foghorn began its long complaint somewhere to the south. Near the twentieth pace the paint vanished under a drift of shingle, and she stopped dead, heart knocking, the wind tugging at her oilskin like a dog that wanted to go home.

She got down on her knees and felt for it with her fingertips, cold and gritty, the way he used to feel for the edge of the step in the dark. Found it. Found it again at the next bend. At each stretch she said the words he had sung to her when she was small and could not sleep, because you're mine, and each time she said them the path came back under her hands.

The lamp room was warm and smelled of brass polish. She wound the clockwork, lit the wick and watched the beam sweep out over water she could not see. Then she opened the logbook and wrote the hour in her own careful hand. Underneath, because he would have wanted the record kept properly, she added: Line held. Light lit. Back by eight.
