Script quote with interlocking hearts

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

Handwritten style black script lettering sets out a four-line quote, right-aligned and centred in a staggered layout. Below it sits a small outline drawing of two interlocking hearts, drawn in fine, even linework with no shading. The design is rendered in black on a plain cream background with no body part visible.

The lamp was already turning when the relief boat bumped against the landing at Skerry Rock, and you were still on the ladder with a tin of paraffin under one arm. Harriet, the boatman's daughter, threw you a sack of post without looking up from her knots. Among the bills and the chandler's catalogue sat a letter in a hand you knew better than your own, the careful, forward-leaning script Ruth used when she was writing to someone she meant to keep.

You did not open it on the stairs. You waited until the wick was trimmed and the glass was clean, the way your father taught you, and then you sat on the iron stool in the lamp room with the wind pressing at the panes. Ruth wrote about the boy's first tooth, the bread she had burnt, the way the mainland lights looked from the kitchen window. At the bottom, under her name, she had drawn two hearts overlapping like a pair of rings, and above them she had written what she always said when she was too shy to say it aloud: that you were the love of her life and the truest friend she had.

You read it twice. Then you folded it small, tucked it into the breast of your oilskin, and went to the signal stand where the shutter waited for the evening boat. You clicked it once, then twice, the old code you had flashed from the cliff path when you were both nineteen and not yet allowed to be anything to each other.

Across the water a single light answered from the mainland, small and steady. You kept your hand on the brass until it went out.
