Seek in brush lettering

Lettering · Black and grey · Flash

A single handwritten word, SEEK, followed by three dots, drawn in black ink with a loose brush style on a plain white background. The strokes vary in thickness and show soft, uneven edges, with no shading or added decoration. The composition is small and centred, with plenty of white space around the lettering.

By the third bell the fog had swallowed the lighthouse, and you were still arguing with the ferryman over the price of a map. Ysmer kept its maps the way it kept its debts, folded small and never quite finished. He tapped the chart with one knuckle. The Kingdom of Vell lay beyond the drowned bridges, he said, but nobody who went looking had come back with the same name for it.

You bought the map anyway, because your sister had gone east in the spring with only a lantern and a promise to write. The last thing she left on the quay was a single word scratched into the mooring post: SEEK. Beneath it were three small marks, as if she had been interrupted mid-sentence or had simply run out of breath. You had spent six months deciding which.

The road to Vell was a line of white pebbles that the tide kept rearranging. Twice you lost it entirely. Each time you stopped, pressed your palm flat to the wet stone and waited, the way she had taught you, until the silence itself leaned in one direction. On the ninth night a woman selling salt at a crossroads looked at your boots, then at your face. 'She went on ahead,' she said. 'She always does. Keep walking. She leaves the last part for whoever follows.'

At the gate of Vell the stone bore the same word, worn to a shadow, with a blank beneath where the next line should have gone. You took the chalk from your coat. Your sister had always said the dots were the honest part, the place a person leaves open on purpose. So you wrote your own name after them, stepped back, and waited for her to finish it.
