That morning a house clearance man had dumped a box of water-stained paperbacks on her trestle without ceremony. Most were fit only for the bin. But at the bottom lay a battered novel with pencil in its margins, and someone called Ivy had written small notes all the way through it. Beside one sentence, where the tram rounds the corner and the heroine decides to go home after all, Ivy had drawn a neat curved mark and beneath it, in a looser hand, *not yet*.

Maud took the book back gently and said it was a semicolon. It meant you stop for a breath but the sentence isn't finished. The girl looked at her as if that were a riddle, then bought the book for fifty pence and left with her hood up.
When the stall was empty Maud opened her takings ledger, wrote the day's total, and then, after a moment's hesitation, drew a small curved mark after it. She had kept the awning up another hour, and the rain had not stopped, but she had not packed up either. Next Saturday, she thought, the stall would open again.
