Sharks and anatomical heart underwater torso piece

Realism · Chest · Colour · Photo

A large underwater scene covers the torso, with a great white shark mid-lunge and a second shark below it. A red anatomical heart drifts above, trailing red clouds, while more distant sharks and faint orange discs sit in the blue water. The shading is smooth and detailed with bold outlines, and the cool blue background shows light rays and a faded city skyline.

Keep your hands off the glass, the lot of you. That big fellow has a taste for knuckles. Right, where was I? Ah yes, the heart. Sit down, Mrs Abney, you'll get a better view from the rail if you stop fidgeting with your purse.

Harbour Row went under the spring the river burst its banks, the year the fair came through with the sea-show still in its crates. The clock tower was the last thing to show above the water, and the lifeboat men swore they saw sharks circling its weathervane like gulls round a bin. Old Tom Calloway went down for the salvage money. He came up two hours later, white as a plate, with a heart in a jar of brine. It was still beating. Every time it beat, a red cloud bled out of the glass and drifted up through the sunlight, and the sharks followed that cloud like hounds after a fox.

Tom tried to sell it to the showmen, but nobody would buy a thing that wanted to go home. So one dusk he rowed out past the breakwater, lifted the lid, and let the heart go. It rose slow, trailing its red smoke past the drowned windows and the faded skyline, and the great grey shark came up beneath it with its jaws wide open. Tom said the heart didn't flinch. He said it looked almost grateful.

Mind the rail on your way out. If you look down past the lamps you'll see the sharks still waiting, and the tower's bell still ringing under the surf. Pay your penny at the gate and I'll show you the empty jar. The glass is still warm, if you ask me nicely.
