Shell and starfish tattoos on toes

Other · Black and grey · Photo

Two small tattoos sit on adjacent toes: a scallop shell on the top of one toe and a starfish on the side of another. Both designs use dark black outlines with grey shading to give them dimension. The background is out of focus and shows a striped fabric, so the tattoos are the clear focus of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cartoon of the floor had been drawn in red chalk on the lime bed, and Lucia had been told to fill the margins with nothing but black and white. Her uncle Gaius was particular. He held each tessera up to the lamp before he let it go into the mortar, turning it until the grain showed like weather in stone. She had cut four hundred that morning and her thumbs were raw from the nippers.

The commission was a dining room in a villa above the bay, a floor for a magistrate who wanted the sea brought indoors. Lucia had walked the shore at dawn and found a scallop shell, pale and ridged, and a starfish dried to the colour of old bread. She had kept them in her tunic all day. Gaius saw them when she tipped them onto the bench and said nothing, which from him was permission.

At dusk, when the lamps were lit and the workmen had gone for their wine, she pressed the starfish into the wet mortar at the border corner, where the guests would step on their way to the couches. The shell went beside it, ribs fanning toward the door. The lime took them quickly. Gaius stood over the corner for a long moment, then drew a thin grey line around the starfish's arms so it would show from the couches.

Years later the villa was buried in ash, and the floor was lifted and stacked and carried off by men who had never heard of Misenum. Lucia's name was on none of it. The starfish and the shell were still there somewhere under the rubble, the only two pieces in the room that nobody had drawn.
